CILENTO: the birth of a legend, between sea and land, among heroes and myths There are places that have no soul. Cilento has two, one that merges with the sea, the other set inland. Cilento is a land of heroes and legends, such as the legend of Palinuro, the unlucky helmsman of Aeneas who, overcome with tiredness, fell into the sea pulling the rudder behind him. Palinuro has numerous sea caves to visit, such as the Grotta delle Ossa (Cave of the Bones), the famous Blue Cave, the Grotta d’Argento (Silver Cave) and the Grotta dei Monaci (Monks’ Cave). The peaceful, unspoilt coves, such as Buon Dormire, Fortuna and Monte di Luna, are perfect for relaxation and quiet. It is the birthplace of the “Mediterranean diet” made famous in the sixties by the American doctor Ancel Keys, who analysed the food model of this part of Italy, where pasta, olive oil, vegetables and fish are the main components of the diet. The area’s tourism offer not only includes the beautiful beaches that made Cilento famous, but also good food, inland areas and traditions, which have become catalysts for a tourism attentive and sensitive to the different aspects that this land can now offer. If you wish to taste the flavours of Cilento, try the home-made pasta with meat sauce, meatballs, rabbit and lamb, prepared according to old Cilento recipes, side dishes of vegetables such as “ciambotta”, a mixture of peppers, aubergines and potatoes served with oil and fresh cherry tomatoes. Come and discover Cilento, land of two souls. |
